Transportation problem may be square or may not be, but assignment must be a square one.
In transportation problem to total supply must be equal to total demand, where as in assignment problem each supply and demand value equals 1.
In Transportation problem the number of units allocated to a cell is greater than or equal to zero, where as In assignment problem number of units allocated to a cell is either zero or 1.
